Paint Shop Spotlight - Smithwick Devils Horse Big O Bream - Bait School Bite Spec

Bait School Bite Spec

Lure: The Smithwick Devils Horse in Big O Bream

When: Early Spring/Summer

Where: Florida, marshland, shallow water reservoirs

Why? The Smithwick Devils Horse is a legend of the topwater game, and undoubtably the most unusual one on the market today due to its ability to get bites even in cold water scenarios. The Devils Horse features two small props located on the head and tail portion of the lure and when popped it causes the lure to kick up a little water and slide across the surface. This approach is deadly for spawning bass in the 50–60-degree range. It is an excellent target casting lure as well because it can be worked slowly around individual pieces of cover such as grass, laydowns, or stumps.

How to Fish: Slow and steady wins the race when using the Devils Horse. You must be patient and work the lure slowly to draw bites from lethargic bass that are spawning or shying away from other lures. I recommend tossing it out next to shallow cover and popping slack line ever so often and wait for a vicious bite! The best equipment to toss the lure is a light action casting rod with a short length such as a 6”6 because you will be routinely popping the lure, but you need to use heavy monofilament line with it because it is a cover-oriented lure. I always choose 20 lb. test monofilament and occasionally go up to 25 around really gnarly stuff.

Look for obvious fish holding structure for this time of year, such as: flooded trees, spawning grounds like pockets, stumps, laydowns, and emergent grass.
