A loud knock built to call bass up in dirty water, rough conditions or deep clear water: the Heddon One Knocker® Spook® is a 4 1/2-inch, 3/4-ounce topwater walking bait with a single tungsten rattle inside a sound-intensifying chamber. Heddon positions that chamber so the lure walks the dog easily. Work it slow and steady over isolated or submerged cover, or near bass chasing baitfish. About This Lure

The Heddon One Knocker® Spook® is a 4 1/2-inch, 3/4-ounce topwater walking bait built for bass in open water over submerged or isolated cover. It is designed to be heard: a loud knock with every twitch, meant to call bass up when they can't easily see a surface lure, whether the water is dirty, the surface is rough or the fish are holding deep in clear water.

That knock comes from a single tungsten rattle inside a sound-intensifying chamber. Heddon says the chamber intensifies the thump the rattle makes and draws fish from long distances, and that the chamber's position in the body also makes the lure easier to walk the dog.

What the one knocker sounds like

One knock per twitch. The One Knocker Spook carries one tungsten rattle rather than a chamber of BBs, so each twitch of the rod produces a single loud thump. That distinctive thump is what gives one-knocker lures their name.

What comes in the package

  • One Heddon One Knocker Spook per pack
  • 4 1/2 in. long, 3/4 oz.
  • #2 Mustad Triple Grip hooks
  • Single tungsten rattle in a sound-intensifying chamber
When to Use It

Reach for the One Knocker Spook when bass will come up for a surface lure but need sound to find it: dirty water, rough or wind-rippled conditions, or clear water where the fish are holding deep. It is built for bass and is also listed for stripers, pike and musky.

Best situations

  • Isolated cover with a little wind putting a ripple on the surface
  • Open water over submerged cover, where bass can rise to the lure
  • Around schools of bass ambushing baitfish
  • Any depth you fish: it works when you are beating the bank and when you are casting out over 50 feet of water

When another choice is better

Skip a walking bait over heavy, matted vegetation, where exposed treble hooks foul easily. If bass want a smaller profile, step down to the 3 1/2-inch, 1/2-ounce Heddon Super Spook Jr. For redfish and trout, the Heddon Saltwater One Knocker Spook carries the One Knocker's features with #2 saltwater hooks.

How to Fish It

Walking the dog, slow and steady

Work it with a slow, methodical walk-the-dog retrieve. Walking the dog means making short, rhythmic twitches of the rod tip while leaving a little slack in the line, so the lure glides left, then right, in a zigzag across the surface. Every twitch should turn the lure's head and sound the knocker.

Cast past submerged or isolated cover and walk the lure over it, or cast to bass you see chasing baitfish in open water.

Key principle: Keep the cadence slow and even. The knocker does the calling, so give bass time to find the lure instead of racing it back to the boat.

Recommended gear setup

Rod
Casting rod · medium action · 6'6"–7'

A 6-foot-6 to 7-foot casting rod with a medium action gives you room to make long casts and work the lure with a steady rhythm.

Reel
Casting reel · 8.1:1 gear ratio

A fast casting reel with an 8.1:1 gear ratio picks up the slack each twitch creates and lets you catch up quickly when a bass hits.

Line
Heavy monofilament or braid

Use heavy monofilament or braided line, in a strength that matches your rod and the cover you are fishing.

Tips from the water

  • Keep one tied on at every depth you fish. The One Knocker Spook works both beating the bank and over 50 feet of water.
  • When a bass blows up on the lure, wait until you feel its weight before setting the hook. Swinging at the splash often pulls the lure away from the fish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Heddon One Knocker Spook and who is it for?

The Heddon One Knocker® Spook® is a 4 1/2-inch, 3/4-ounce topwater walking bait for bass anglers who want a loud surface lure. A single tungsten rattle inside a sound-intensifying chamber makes a loud thump with every twitch, which Heddon says draws fish from long distances.

What size is the One Knocker Spook, and what comes in the pack?

Each pack holds one Heddon One Knocker Spook. The lure is 4 1/2 inches long, weighs 3/4 ounce and comes with #2 Mustad Triple Grip hooks.

How do you fish the One Knocker Spook, and what rod, reel and line should you use?

Walk the dog with a slow, methodical cadence: short, rhythmic rod-tip twitches with a little slack so the lure zigzags across the surface. Pair it with a 6-foot-6 to 7-foot medium-action casting rod, a casting reel with an 8.1:1 gear ratio, and heavy monofilament or braided line.

What conditions is the One Knocker Spook built for?

It is built for times when bass need sound to find a surface lure: dirty water, rough or wind-rippled conditions, and clear water where fish are holding deep. It is especially suited to isolated cover with a little wind rippling the surface.

Should I choose the One Knocker Spook or the Rattlin' Spook?

Choose the One Knocker Spook for the single thump of one tungsten rattle, and the Heddon Rattlin' Spook when you want the sound of a chamber of tungsten BBs. Both are 4 1/2 inches and 3/4 ounce with #2 Mustad Triple Grip hooks, so the main difference is the sound.

When is the One Knocker Spook not the right choice?

Skip it over heavy, matted vegetation, where exposed treble hooks foul easily. For a smaller profile, use the 3 1/2-inch, 1/2-ounce Heddon Super Spook Jr. For redfish and trout, the Heddon Saltwater One Knocker Spook comes with #2 saltwater hooks.

Does the One Knocker Spook work over deep water?

Yes. It is worth keeping handy at any depth: it works when you are beating the bank and when you are casting out over 50 feet of water. It always runs on the surface, and its loud knock is meant to call fish up to it.
