It’s summertime. Let the water skiers, boaters, pontoon pirates and jet skiers rule the afternoons.

Fishermen rule the early mornings. The BOOYAH Boss Pop will make sure of that.

Starting your day early can mean the difference between an outstanding fishing trip and just an average one in the summer.

There are a few keys that can ensure topwater success on just about any highland reservoir:

  1. Get up early. As in one hour before the sun comes up. Get to the lake while it’s still dark and have your boat in the water as it’s just getting light. You can typically get in an hour of fishing before sunrise. And this can be the best 60 minutes of fishing you’ll get all year. Fish will be roaming the shallows before daybreak looking for something to eat, and being there early can ensure some massive blowups.
  2. Tie on a BOOYAH Boss Pop, in either the 2- or 3-inch size. Use translucent colors such as the Moonphase Shad, Pearl Melon, X-Ray or Ghost Shiner. Translucent colors have clear sides and will not give off the same “flash” as metallized colors such as Chrome Black, Arkansas Shiner or Flashy Momma. Many times, the translucent colors will draw strikes in very clear water when the shiny colors won’t attract as many bites.
  3. Use a spinning rod and reel with 6- or 8-pound test monofilament. Using light line will allow you to make very long casts and will also make your Boss Pop “dance” and flutter more than it would with heavier line. This extra “bounce” in the lure can create more strikes. You can also cast a Boss Pop much further on a spinning outfit than you can a baitcaster, and wind won’t affect your distance at all.
  4. While the Boss Pop is a “popper,” don’t be afraid to “walk the dog” with this lure. The Boss Pop was designed to dart back and forth, much like a Heddon Zara Spook. The versatile Boss Pop can chug water, spit or pop water and also dart back and forth. You should mix presentations until the fish tells you how they want it. When you figure that out, keep doing it!
  5. Stick with it. You may go 30 minutes or an hour without bites. But stick with the topwater presentation. Big fish will hit a topwater lure early in the morning in the summer. Don’t get discouraged. The bites will happen.
  6. Focus on main lake points and secondary points. Fish will not typically be in the backs of pockets in the dog days of summer, but they will feed on main lake points and secondary points. The quick access to deep water means they will be feeding shallow at various times. They will also hold on these points if power generation occurs in hydroelectric reservoirs. There are many points on most main lakes. Once you figure out the fish are there, you can duplicate strikes on points all over the main lake.

There is nothing like being on a great topwater bite in the cool of the morning on your favorite lake. At some point, the sun will begin to rise, and the fish will move deeper. Which brings another decision to make for most fishermen: Do you keep fishing deeper or do you go to your favorite breakfast spot and reminisce about all those topwater bites?
