Fish Extreme When Nothing Else Works
When fishing at Beaver Lake in a 2003 BFL tournament, I had decided to try to catch fish a certain way. Fish don’t always cooperate. In the course of the tournament day, my co-angler and I had tried to catch spotted bass in multiple places multiple ways. We had three fish in the boat and they were small. In the last hour of the day, I decided if I was going to make the Regional, it would not be by weighing in these small spots.
I had gotten too far behind early in the year in points. A good limit of spots would get me to the Regional. The technique I was using wasn’t working, so it was time to change. I decided to go to the shallow boat docks. My bait of choice was the 4-inch YUM Mega Tube, using an Excalibur Tx3 #4 worm hook and a 1/2-ounce Excalibur Tg Tungsten weight tied to Excalibur 20-pound line. I pegged the sinker and began pitching the bait into tight dock stalls that held boats. I put the bait into the deepest darkest corners I could find. I am convinced that the YUM Mega Tube loaded with LPT made the difference in getting bit. I finished the day by making the Regional.
Extreme fishing sometimes requires extreme thinking. Who would have thought heavy line, a heavy weight, a big bait and big hook in shallow, clear water would have worked?
Extreme fishing sometimes means doing the opposite of what conventional thinking says to do.
