10 Top Lures for Multi-Species Fishing

Many lures are designed with a specific type of game fish in mind or marketed mostly for a particular group of fishermen. Fish don’t watch fishing shows, though, and often the same attributes that make a lure effective for one kind of fish also attract the attention of other species. Anglers can get more for their money by investing in lures that work well for multiple species of fish and can be used in many different settings. With that in mind, we’ve hand picked several of the best "multi-tasking" lures on the market:

I had the honor to fish with Brent Calender of the USMC yesterday in the Wounded Warriors Benefit Tournament in Decatur, Ala. I want to take a minute to tell you a story that is fitting for this day. It is the story of Brent and the day he was injured in combat in Iraq. Brent and two other members of his unit were responding to a call of enemy fire in a suspected enemy area.

What do you do with the $1,525 first prize you win in a charity fishing tournament? If you’re Joe Thompson of Ridley Park, Penn., you donate the money back to the cause. 5 YUM Pros Earn Classic Bids

After the last fish was weighed at Lake Oneida, wrapping up the 11-event 2008 Bassmaster Elite Series, five YUM pros had their tickets punched for the 2009 Bassmaster Classic. Alton Jones, Edwin Evers, Terry Scroggins, Tim Horton and Dave Wolak are all on their way to the Classic, which will be held in February on the Red River in Shreveport, Louisiana. As 2008 Bassmaster Classic champion, Alton Jones actually had his bid secured before he made his first cast this season. Finishing fifth in the points race, though, Jones would have easily made the Classic cut had he needed to qualify.

Finding Fish on New Waters

Fishing an unfamiliar lake can be daunting. Anglers commonly question where to even start, and too often the decision is somewhat random. Professional anglers regularly compete on waterways they have never even seen before, allowing minimal time for locating bass, and these anglers cannot afford to fish randomly. With that in mind, we spoke with 2008 Bassmaster Classic champion Alton Jones about his normal searching process. "My first step will always be to find out all I can about the personality of the lake. I want to know whether it tends to be clear or stained, whether it has wood or rock, what kind of vegetation is in it, and that sort of thing.

10 Great Baits for Family Fishing Outings

As spring gives way to summer, now is the time to take your children on some fun fishing outing. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of 10 baits that are especially well suited for family fishing trips because they are easy to work, commonly attract a variety of species and/or tend to produce plenty of bites.YUM TroutKrillaTrout make great targets for youngsters when the action is fast, and nothing will keep the trout biting like YUM TroutKrilla, which combines real Krill with YUM’s exclusive Live Prey Technology. YUM Money Minnows – Basic Rigging

The YUM Money Minnow is the "talk of the town" in the bass fishing community, and word is also spreading quickly to anglers who more commonly seek stripers, trout, walleyes and various saltwater species. The natural tail wag and lifelike finish make this soft-plastic swimbait irresistible to any gamefish – and when a lure produces fish like mad – it doesn’t take long for word to spread. Although a Money Minnow can be rigged several different ways, the approach most commonly used by professional anglers is to use an extra wide-gap offset "worm hook" or shank-weighted "swimbait hook" and rig the bait weedless. The most popular presentation almost seems too simple. Cast, reel slowly and get ready to set the hook.

Jimmy Houston Says, "BOOYAH!"

Jimmy Houston has several new weapons in his angling arsenal and a new phrase to go along with them. The popular host of Jimmy Houston Outdoors, who is well known for his trademark hairdo and laugh, now has reason to call out, "BOOYAH!" when he sets the hook into a hefty largemouth.
