We Get Letters -- Pennsylvania Walleyes

4/2/09

From: William Miller of Elizabethvle, Pa.

I’ve always been frugal (some might even call me cheap!) and when I see a good deal I take advantage of it. I was buying last minute supplies for a recent fishing outing and noticed some Rebel Minnows that looked like the ones I often catch walleyes on at night. They were half the price of the brands I usually use. Being recently laid off, I’ve been trimming my budget and decided to buy one.

Rebel Minnows
During the early February thaw the walleye action had been pretty good at night. Over the past several evenings my buddy and I had had a good run, picking up fish from the Susquehanna River in numbers and size normally reserved for late fall. This night the water had come up about a foot and was a little dirtier. The floating ice was thicker as it made its way down from up north. Dodging the massive chunks made the mile run upriver an adventure in itself. When we got to our spot, only a narrow swath near the shore remained relatively ice-free, so we beached the boat and fish from shore.

It was slow and we had just a few strikes just before dark. At nightfall it picked up a little, then came to a halt. After about half an hour of no strikes, I got out one of my expensive plugs stuck and broke it off. That’s when I thought of the Rebel Minnow I’d purchased.

The first things I noticed were the needle-sharp hooks. They caught everything -- my pants, jacket cuffs and vegetation. I caught a good fish on my second cast. Several casts later I caught another, and during the next 30 minutes I doubled my take from the previous two hours while my buddy went fishless. He thought I’d found a honey hole and asked if I’d switch places. I did, and on my first cast from his spot I hooked our biggest fish of the week, and 8-pounder.

Moments later the wind picked up and a storm moved in so we headed back. The severe storm raised the water level and muddied the water and shut down fishing for a while. But I’ll be back. Thanks for making a great product at a price the average guy can appreciate.
