Bombers Troll Up Salmon Action in Sweden

04/28/2006

When pro bass angler Tim Horton helped Bomber Lures design some new colors for the Bomber 15A a few years ago, he probably didn't have salmon fishing in mind. His colors were inspired to catch bass.

Don't tell that to salmon guide Martin Sethman of Sweden. Sethman's tackle boxes of trolling plugs are loaded with Bomber 15As. Many of the slots are filled with Horton's Pro Suspending Long A colors.

While guiding on Lake Varnen, Sweden's largest lake, in late April 2006, Sethman demonstrated how he uses Horton's Long As and other proven Bomber colors to troll up some exciting salmon action. Varnen had recently "iced out" after a late Swedish winter, and the salmon were ready to chase food.

On this day, Sethman had 12 lines out – all offering various colors and models of Bomber 15As. He said the salmon had been feeding high, and the 15A was the perfect lure for this situation.

"We have been catching salmon on Bombers for many years, Sethman said. "It is a favorite lure of many salmon fishermen in Sweden – especially early in the season after the ice."

Sethman was targeting warmer water on this day instead of a specific water depth. He focused on areas that were 4 degrees (Celsius), while the average surface temperature was in the 2-degree range.

Sethman and fellow Swedish anglers Hans and Leif Lindholm boated seven fish on this day – six salmon and one trout. Two of the salmon were nice keepers. Besides the Tim Horton colors, Sethman used traditional Bomber patterns such as XRT (Rainbow Trout). He also used some "special" Bomber colors that are available only in Scandinavia.

It was the Tim Horton Watermelon Pearl that caught the largest fish on this day. This lure is equipped with Gamakatsu hooks, and the fish that hit this lure were heading only one way – to the boat! Hans Lindholm had the pleasure of reeling in the biggest fish of the day – a nice keeper salmon that made the trip back to his house for dinner.

Lake Varnen is full of vegetation and rocks. It is also full of salmon, trout, pike and zander.

A neat feature on the lake is Lacko Slott, a castle that was began in 1298. Construction to complete the current structure was finished in 1654. It is a unique side trip for any angler visiting the lake for the first time.

Sethman guides year round on Varnen and other bodies of water in Sweden. He specializes in salmon.
